Grace Church Cathedral, a Gothic style church building, was completed in 1848. Though damaged during the Civil War, Grace remained open until January 1864. A single shell destroyed part of the clerestory, forcing the church to suspend services for about a year until repairs could be made. The earthquake of 1886 damaged the church almost beyond repair, and the government inspection team recommended it be demolished. However, one member of that team thought the church could be saved, and the vestry hired him to oversee repairs to save the structure. In 2005, the Vestry was informed that the steeple had begun to lean, and the clerestory walls were in danger of collapsing. As the steeple repair was completed, an earthquake in Virginia in 2011 sent vibrations as far south as Charleston, exposing serious structural problems with the clerestory walls, and again extensive repairs were required. Notable features include a large stained glass window over the altar depicting four sacraments of the church, and a window over the entrance depicting Christ giving commission to men and women over the years, which includes over 10,000 individual pieces of glass.
