St. John’s Lutheran Church, a Greek Revival style church dedicated in 1818, is the “mother church” of Lutheranism in South Carolina. The church bell was given to the Confederacy, so the tower now rings with a 19-bell cast bronze carillon. The front gates of the church represent some of the finest wrought iron work in Charleston. Both the cemetery and the building are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notable features include the Federal and Baroque elements of the rectangular, stuccoed brick building and the Italianate steeple with a bell-shaped roof.
